Base plate repairs with adhesive anchors

Base plate repairs are a common challenge for EoRs, and post-installed adhesive anchors are a fast and reliable repair solution in this case. With the new Connection–Detail interoperability in IDEA StatiCa, you can now model them more easily and simulate their real behavior with greater accuracy, reducing your design time on site-specific fixes.

We've previously discussed how IDEA StatiCa Connection can help you with issues such as anchor misalignment, base plate cutouts, and other field adjustments. By enabling efficient analysis and design verification, IDEA StatiCa helps to significantly reduce project delays.

However, one common solution that wasn't discussed then is the usage of post-installed anchors, specifically adhesive (epoxy anchors). These anchors are a quick and reliable solution for engineers and contractors. With the new interoperability of IDEA StatiCa Connection and Detail, using adhesive anchors is now easier than ever, and the simulation of the actual effect is more accurate.

Solution review

In IDEA StatiCa Connection, you can model customized base plates and anchor arrangements. In cases where you need to model a combination of existing cast-in-place anchors and newly proposed epoxy anchors, because they are still close to the base plate, you can set them up in IDEA StatiCa as follows:

Epoxy, adhesive anchors and regular anchors

If you choose not to consider the misaligned bolts, you can model the base plate using only the epoxy anchors.

Once you run the analysis, you can observe the forces on the anchors and the code checks. However, as the report shows, the post-installed anchors:

However, by integrating Detail 3D in the design process, you can now check all the requirements mandated by the code. Simply export the analyzed model to Detail for further analysis.

In Detail 3D, verify the epoxy anchors by entering the specified bond strength from the manufacturer’s data sheet.

Next, add the concrete reinforcement to the model. Detail 3D lets you control bar size, spacing, cover, hooks, and anchorage to match the intended detailing.

Run the analysis to review detailed results such as stress flows, concrete compressive strength, steel reinforcement tension strength, bond strength, and other parameters critical for ACI 318 anchoring checks.

For epoxy anchors, focus the design check on two items: the direct tensile force in the bar and the bond stress developed along the embedment.

This process allows you to assess adhesive anchors under actual site conditions, from replacing misaligned anchors to supplementing existing base plates, ensuring your repair plan meets both design intent and construction constraints.

Conclusion

Base plate on-site repairs rarely fit the “textbook” case, and post-installed adhesive anchors are often the most practical path forward. With the combined workflow of Connection and Detail apps, you no longer need to rely on assumptions. You can analyze, verify, and document your solution with confidence, directly against code requirements and manufacturer data.
